Marketing a Surgery – Part 2: Surgical Instruments for the Eye

What Surgical Tools Are Used for Eye Surgery?

There may be a number of different surgical tools that are used for any medical procedure. These may differ from one procedure to another, but one thing remains consistent: using a high quality surgical tool allows the doctor to perform the surgery, while at the same time, limiting the liability and the possibility that problems can occur.
For eye surgery, there may be any number of different surgical tools used and again, this varies according to the surgical procedure. The following are some of the more commonly used tools and why you should consider choosing them wisely.
Speculum – This piece of surgical equipment is important for almost any type of surgical procedure involving the eye. They are designed to keep the eye open while the operation is taking place. There is a universal eye speculum, which keeps the eye open but does not keep eyelashes out of the area. A guarded eye speculum, however, is able to keep eyelashes from entering the operating field.
Forceps – It may be necessary to grip or hold various parts of the eye while the surgery is taking place. Forceps provide that ability, and they come in many different shapes and sizes, depending upon the need. For example, a Moorfields forcep can be beneficial for grabbing and holding the conjunctiva while the Adson forcep will hold the skin during certain types of ocular surgery.
Many eye doctors will have a number of different forcep options available for their use. Having the right tool for the right job is imperative to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible. Although it may be possible to use a standard forcep for a variety of uses, it is best to have the one that is right for the job.
Needle Holder – In order to hold the needles that are used during the surgical procedure, a needle holder may be necessary. There are a number of holders available, depending upon the size of the needle and the work that is being done. For example, a Silcock needle holder may be used for heavy gauge needles, but a Barraquer needle holder is used for fine gauge needles.
Knives – There are a wide variety of knives that are also available for eye operations. One that is used for cataract surgery is the von Graefe’s cataract knife. The Tookes’ knife can also be used for making small incisions during cataract surgery and the crescent knife can be used for a similar purpose.
These are just some of the many different surgical tools that may be used during an eye surgery procedure. It is not only important to ensure that the proper tools are available, it is also important to ensure that they are of highest quality and to continue to maintain them during the time that they are used. From time to time, it is also a good idea to add new surgical tools into the mix or to replace one that has been in use for quite some time.
